In order to narrow down which patterns will work best for you, I recommend a three-step process

  • Identifying your site’s goal
  • Research on some competitor’s site & examine how other sites use different patterns
  • Dissect the patterns and choose the elements right for you

1. Identify your site’s goal:
Identifying the site’s goal is the core most thing to do before starting with a website. You can keep a note of all your goals and policies in a white paper or somewhere in the docs. It would be a great help to creating the process flow.

2. Research on some competitor’s site & examine how other sites use different patterns:
Take some time to review what others offer. Add/Delete/modify your taste with it. It is very effective.

3. Dissect the patterns and choose the elements right for you:
Now as you have the goal and you have researched competitor’s sites, so the final thing would the drawing the basic sketch or wore frame. By taking a problem-oriented approach to selecting UI patterns, you prevent yourself from choosing a layout simply because it’s the hip thing to do. While many UI patterns deserve their popularity, you should never base your web designs simply on what’s trending.
